    wedding in Crete and traditions

What are the customs of a Cretan wedding?

    1.  The wedding koulouri and the wedding pilaf are two Cretan wedding foods. The wedding koulouri is a bread ring embroidered with symbols of fertility such as grapes, pomegranates or pine cones. The wedding pilaf is a dish of slowly cooked meat and rice simmered in its broth. The pilaf symbolizes the “root” and fertility of the newlyweds.
    2.  Mpalothies(firing shots into the air without bullets) intertwined with Cretan “identity”, associated with honor and dignity, and are the fundamental values of Cretan culture and tradition.
    3. At the wedding, they wear a handmade white silf scarf with tassels (sariki) on their heads or shoulders.
    4. The wedding party always ends with a love song (mantinada) It is an improvised Cretan song for the bride and groom and is always joyful. An informal, unwritten, but unbreakable rule of the Cretan wedding… the dance! If you find yourself at a Cretan celebration, be prepared to dance until morning.
